Biomonitoring Atmospheric Pollution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Using Mosses

نویسندگان

چکیده

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as the main components of petroleum (PHCs), are carcinogenic organic pollutants that occur widely in atmospheric environment with increasing concentration. Moreover, PAHs widespread all over world due to their high volatility and long-range transport potential. The monitoring is often limited by working conditions, especially around oil field operation areas other industrial areas. Mosses (Bryophyta), most sensitive atmosphere pollution indicators, can be easily collected have been used monitor including PAHs. Thus, characteristics influencing factors mosses’ absorption accumulation were discussed, application mosses biomonitoring summarized. Biomonitoring include Dicranum scoparium, Hypnum cupressiforme, Thamnobryum alopecurum, Thuidium tamariscinum, Hylocomium splendens, Pleurozium scheberi, etc. Currently, methods for chemical analysis method, index purity (IAP) ecological survey Moss-bag technique. using has a relatively wide range prospects.

Atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Mumbai, India

Atmospheric particulate PAH concentrations were measured at two locations in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India. Total PAH concentrations (seven compounds) at Saki Naka and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) were 38.8 and 24.5 ng m~3. Pyrene and benz(a)anthracene#chrysene were abundant at both sites while benzo(b)#uoranthene and benzo(k)#uoranthene were abundant, in addition, at the IIT site. Th...

Alternative normalization method of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons pollution level recorded by tree bark.

An alternative normalization method was developed for evaluating atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution level when using tree bark as a passive sampling medium. Perylene (PER), which mainly stems from natural biogenic processes, was proposed as a "natural internal compound" (NIC) of atmospheric PAHs accumulation processes from air into the bark, and a concentration ratio ...

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Atmospheric Depositions around the Venice Lagoon

Studies have revealed the potential risks to which human health and ecosystems are exposed in the Venice Lagoon, due to the atmospheric deposition of persistent pollutants such as trace metals and organic compounds. A total of seventy-seven atmospheric bulk deposition samples were collected monthly from April 2002 to December 2004, from three sites located in the cities of Mestre and Venice, an...

Atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: Source attribution, emission factors and regulation

There is an increasing concern about the occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment as they are ubiquitous in ambient air and some of them are among the strongest known carcinogens. PAHs and their derivatives are produced by the incomplete combustion of organic material arising, partly, from natural combustion such as forest and volcanic eruption, but with the majo...

Biodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Petroleum Contaminated Soils

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a class of potentially hazardous chemicals of environmental and health concern. PAHs are one of the most prevalent groups of contaminants found in soil. Biodegradation of complex hydrocarbon usually requires the cooperation of more than single specie. In this research biotreatment of PAH (phenanthrene) was studied in a solid-phase reactor using indigenou...
